It's hard to judge this book, (auto)biographical/historic fiction in the form of a graphic novel. As most of you know, it's Spiegelman's father's story of surviving the Nazis, with the Jews as mice, the Germans as cats, and the Poles as pigs. (I forget what the dogs were.) It's also Spiegelman's story about getting the story out of his elderly father. I do have to say that mice are not the most expressive animals*, so I couldn't always read their emotions. Also, Spiegelman's father is not very sympathetic, in youth or old age. And lastly, it took me out of the book when Spiegelman reproduced pages from his early comic, featuring human beings of course. Still, he does a good job of blending tones, moods, and settings.
*At least as Spiegelman draws them. Some picture book artists, like Kevin Henkes and Emily McCully, have been more successful.
